An owner knew why her dog's teeth chatter. Had researched the internet and had consulted Vet 1 | Her vet insisted that she sign the anaesthesia consent form in case the dog dies on the operating table and she sued | She was very worried. Her mum was worried. "All vets and hospital surgeons require this written consent before surgery as litigation does happen when deaths occur" I said. I did not enforce this requirement to alleviate her distress. She knew the anaesthetic risks for old dogs.
Be observant. Show her the facial swellings which are the start of oro-nasal fistulas. She will read up on oro-fistulas. I referred her to a Toa Payoh Vets video clip at youtube.com | After 5 days of antibiotics at home, gas anaesthesia for dental work started. Blood test and heart exam were normal and so, the chances of survival were very good | The Vet Assistant must be focused and competent. No sedation has disadvantages. Just gas only takes a much longer time and the dog may bite or die during the excitement period | Gas mask at 5%. An excitement period. Know what to do. Release and give mask again. Intubate when blinking reflex is gone. Tilt table downwards
Monitor the vital signs. A good vet assistant is worth his weight in gold | Gas at 1-2% maintenance. Not less, not more than 2.5% | Complete dental work in less than 10 minutes as the 19 teeth were loose | End of anaesthesia. Time taken: 19 minutes as there was an excitement period taking some time
Dog wakes up. Pain-killer given. Antibiotics and goes home within 1 hour | Tonsils inflamed due to badly infected teeth and gums. 3 good teeth remain. 19 teeth extracted. | No more teeth chattering. A happy young lady sees her dog alive. No more bad breath or tonsillitis and oral tumours later | 19 teeth to present to the happy lady. She whipped out her handphone to take a picture and thanked me. Happy endings are not guaranteed.
