PUPPY TIPS NO. 1
- LOOSE STOOLS NOW AND THEN
Dr Sing Kong Yuen, BVMS (Glasgow),
MRCVS
First written: Dec 30, 2009 |
A tall
man and his Dad who
was touring Singapore
presented an puppy
interesting problem during
the 3rd vaccination of the
puppy.
Golden Retriever puppy,
male, 3 months, 3 weeks.
Bought from
pet shop 1.5 months
ago. The question: "Loose
stools now and then since
purchase 1.5 months ago.
Why?"
Food: "Dry food only," the
young man in his 30s said
when I asked whether he
feeds the puppy other things
than kibbles. I asked about
chew treats and how many he
gave to the puppy. He said:
"Chew bones - 2 sticks per
week. The puppy swallowed
them."
"Do you provide Nylabone
chew bone?" I asked. "Do you
know where to buy them?"
"Yes," the man said. "We
have them in South Africa.
The puppy prefers the chew
sticks anytime".
"The quality of chew sticks
is usually from unknown
ingredients. They are cheap
and much loved by puppies.
Not all puppies suffer from
loose stools eating them."
So what are other possible
causes?
Other intake - no grass or
soil, no socks, newspapers.
No milk.
"How is the toilet
training?" I asked.
Grate + Pee Pan in
the kitchen when home alone
in the apartment.
-
Outdoors 3x/day. No
housebreaking problem.
Veterinary examination
- Mild anterior
abdominal pain as evident by
the puppy feeling
uncomfortable and giving out
a soft whine
whenever I palpated the
stomach area.
Advices
- No edible chew
sticks till the stools
are no longer soft at
times.
Nylabone chew toy OK
as this chew toy is
usually strong enough
not to break into
pieces.
- No table
food (chicken meat
given now and then).
-
Antibiotic oral
10 days
-
Anti-protozoa oral 5
days
- Deworm
once per week for 4
weeks.
Wait 2 weeks. Stools
should be normal.
Cause of loose stools
could be due to
intestinal worms such
as the whipworms which
are difficult to
remove or additional
items in feeding e.g.
eating dog treats and
pieces of chicken from
the table. No milk was
fed in this case.
Feeding dry dog food
plus water should
result in solid stools
in this puppy.
