Hamster Tumour Myths Amongst Singaporeans

Dr Sing Kong Yuen, BVMS (Glasgow), MRCVS The following e-mail research reply to Toa
Payoh Vets shoes typical thinking of many hamster owners in Singapore
about no surgery for hamster tumours. A new internet gemeration like
Remy's owner is well educated and informed.
2) I
applied 'FRAMIXIN H' a antibiotic-anti
inflammatory
cream after cleaning the affected area
with 'AURACIENS' I got both from the
(Name of vet practice) many months back
when my hamster 1st had his 1st
tumour-wart
3) I googled 'Hamster tumour' and
your vet was the 1st entry! I was
looking for more info because the 1st
vet i went to wasn't very confident
about surgery, and the in-house vet at
...
pet shop and my friend working in
a pet shop all advised me against
hamster surgery saying they will usually
die while leaving the tumour alone is
ok. While i searched the internet,
articles say that tumours not removed
will cause the hamster a painful death
or something. And that if it's a
pus-filled growth, it will eventually
burst and the hamster will die from
licking off the toxic pus or something
like that. So i decided to get a 2nd
opinion. When i read your case studies.
I knew that if the tumour grew big, i
would get very disturbed, so i had to
find a way to get rid of it if the risk
of success outweighs the death :)

- 2581. Skin tumours and warts do not vanish with the application of
skin cream and ingestion of solution even if these are prescribed by
the vet. Surgical excision is advised.
Hamster in this case is 1.5 years old. Average life span
is 2-2.5 years. His slim lady owner in her 20s overfeeds him and has
celebrated his birthday recently.
She
did not wait too long to get the tumour excised compared to one of
my biggest hamster tumour case (picture, left) - see :
After Hamster tumour excision care. Slimming for Remy was
strongly advised if she wants him to live longer.
