BE KIND TO HAMSTERS -
consult your vet early
when their tumours are very small or when they fall sick

A LARGE
TUMOUR
1744-45.
Anaesthesia is much safer for the hamster when a small
tumour is removed.
Spare some time to get tumour removed
by your vet when the tumour is not so
large. Large tumour requires longer
time to operate and increases risk of
death. This hamster's tumour was
removed with injectable zoletil IM
anaesthesia topped up by isoflurane anaesthetic
gas.
1.
CELLULITIS ON LOWER BODY
2. BITE WOUND
1452.
Daily skin check esp. the infected skin of the belly of your
old hamster to prevent cellulitis.
1678.
Two female dwarf hamsters squabbled.
One got bitten. Even though they grow
up together, some hamsters bite each
other when they mature. They just
can't live together! Your cage may be
too small now.
IMPACTED AND INFECTED CHEEK POUCH
1593.
"Any side effects of the anaesthetic gas for my
hamster after going home?" the young lady ask.
"No," I said. "No more bread for
your hamster."
1592.
Hamster grooming vigorously and suddenly expelled the big
bread mass (Y).
1591.
Storing bread for a rainy day. Very smelly
hardened lump of mainly bread in the left cheek
pouch.
1590.
Does the hamster look normal? Impacted and infected
left cheek pouch.
EYELID
ABSCESSES
1496.
Owner not to let hamster feed from high food trough or lap
water from bowl. Use of water bottle, low feed pan. Clean up
cage. Eye drops to be given twice a day 5 days.
1495.
The lady owner was unable to give antibiotics at home as
hamster resisted. Eyelid abscesses recurred for 3rd time.
1494.
3rd general anaesthesia to lance eyelid abscesses in
past 2 months. Poor cage hygiene suspected.
1493.
Lady owner in her 30s suspected water bottle is
contaminated. Let hamster lap water from high water
trough.
EYELID ABSCESS
1446.
Wait and see. Owner to give antibiotic eye drops for both eyes
for 7 days.
1445.
Post-operation cleaning of the eye daily by the owner is very
important.
1444.
Creamy pus inside the conjunctiva of the eyes caused by
bacteria.
1443.
Hamster with right eyelid abscesses.
A
LARGE SKIN TUMOUR
1441.
Follow up with your vet in 2 weeks when skin tumour grows larger.
Fortunately for this hamster, the large armpit skin wound
after removal of the tumour closed by granulation tissue and
the hamster lived a normal life.
1440.
Hamster went to exercise after waking up from isoflurane
anaesthesia.
1439.
High tension skin area. Very difficult to stitch as stitches
will break down and the hamster can't walk properly or groom
himself.
1438.
Large pieces of tumour excised.
1437.
A time-pressed lady did not follow up with the vet after 2 weeks.
Tumour grows.
